Problems running GEOS under Windows ****************** Windows 2000 *************** See Windows NT in another help file ****************** Windows Me *************** Windows ME n'est qu'un nouvel avatar de Windows 3.1, 95, 98 etc. La manière de faire fonctionner NDOR3 sur Windows ME est donc la même : ajouter dans le fichier GEOS.INI la ligne : primaryFSD = ms4.geo ou bien fs = ms4.geo Ce qui revient au même. The most common problem is a KR-29 "No valid font files in Userdata\Font" message. This happens because Windows 95 provides a new version of DOS, MS DOS 7, and GEOS cannot find an appropriate file system driver for this new version of DOS. Fortunately, Microsoft also provides SETVER to fix this problem. Ensemble may be installed from Windows 95, just launch an MS-DOS window and install normally. Most computers that come with or are upgraded to Windows95 are higher performance machines with fast processors. The Setup program for GEOS does not work correctly on those machines (although GEOS itself runs just fine). If you develop the KR-1 error while installing GEOS please refer to the next article below 'KR-01 error during Setup'. If GEOS cannot find your mouse driver, try the one named for your mouse and try the "No Idea" choice near the top of the list. If you still can't find an appropriate mouse driver, choose "None" or "Arrow Key Mouse" and you can install the mouse driver later in Preferences. If you're installing on a Pentium or other fast computer and experience a KR-01 error, see the article about that in this database. ADD LOADER TO THE VERSION TABLE ------------------------------- Before running Ensemble from Windows 95, you need to add LOADER to the version table. In your MS-DOS window, enter the following two commands: CD \WINDOWS SETVER C:\WINDOWS LOADER.EXE 6.3 (or you can use LOADER.EXE 5.0 or LOADER.EXE 6.0, any version prior to 7.0 should work). If your Windows 95 is installed on a different drive or in a different directory, modify the commands as appropriate for your drive and path name, of course. Do not include any path for LOADER, however. Now shut down and restart your computer to make the changes to the version table take effect. CONFIGURE WINDOWS 95 TO RUN ENSEMBLE ------------------------------------ Back in Windows 95, click the right mouse button and choose Explore. In Explorer, locate the \GEOS20 directory and click the right mouse button on the GEOS20.PIF file. The file will appear as an MS-DOS icon. Choose Properties and make sure that the file is a "Shortcut to MS-DOS Program" and the file name is GEOS20.PIF. In Properties, click the Program tab and check that the path and working directory are correct. If you make any changes, click Apply. Click the Advanced button. Look at the settings for the two items below. [x] Prevent MS-DOS based programs from detecting Windows. [ ] Suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary. Some folks recommend toggling them both ON. Your mileage may vary. When you're running Ensemble, if you find that Windows interrupts you to recommend DOS mode, answer NO. Then return to this setting and try changing "Suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary" to OFF. [ I recommend setting the first to ON and the second to OFF] Click the Memory tab. All the items should be set to Auto. At least one user recommends that Conventional Memory/Protected be toggled OFF and Extended (XMS) Memory/Uses HMA be toggled ON. Click the Screen tab. Set Usage to Full-screen, initial size: Default. Leave the Window and Performance buttons toggled ON. Click Apply, then click OK. Now you can double click on the GEOS20.PIF file to run Ensemble 2.0. MAKE AN ICON OR LAUNCHER FOR ENSEMBLE ------------------------------------- Here are three different ways to create an icon or button for Ensemble on your Windows 95 desktop. 1. Click the right mouse button on the GEOS20.PIF file and choose Create Shortcut. Drag the "Shortcut to GEOS20" to your desktop. 2. Using the left mouse button, drag the GEOS20.PIF file to the Start button. 3. Add GEOS20.PIF to your Start/Programs menu. IF YOUR MOUSE IS NOT WORKING If your mouse is not working in Ensemble, use keyboard navigation to run Preferences. Choose the Mouse module and select the Change button. Try the "No Idea" driver. If that doesn't work, try the "Generic" mouse driver or the driver named for your mouse. If you're loading a MOUSE.COM or MOUSE.SYS driver in your DOS startup files, you may need to stop doing so and use Windows 95's built in mouse support. PRINTING -------- If you are having trouble printing from Ensemble when running from Windows 95, there are two different places you may need to change your configuration. One is in Windows 95 itself, and the other is in Ensemble's Preferences. The necessary settings vary from one computer to another. Run Preferences in Ensemble. Click on the Computer button. Your printer is most likely on LPT 1. There are four choices for the LPT port: DOS, BIOS, 5, and 7. Most customers have success using the 7 setting. If that doesn't work, try the BIOS setting or try the DOS setting. In Windows 95, choose Printers in the Control Panel. Click the right mouse button on your default printer and choose Properties. In Properties, click on the Details tab. Click Port Settings and Spool MS-DOS print jobs. Click Spool Settings. You'll see the following choices. If printing isn't working with one choice, try the other one. [x] Start printing after the last page is spooled [ ] Start printing after the first page is spooled Article#0090 Updated 09/27/95 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> KR-01 error during Setup ------------------------ You may get a "KR-01 Divide by zero" error message while installing GEOS on your Pentium or fast 486 computer. The error would occur during the Printer Driver selection part of the Graphical Setup. This is due to an incompatibility between the Setup program and fast CPU's. At the time the setup program was written there were no CPU's fast enough to cause this problem, but no fear, the fix is easy and GEOS runs without problem on speedy CPU's. Go to the directory where GEOS is installed and use the DOS editor [or your Windows text editor] to edit the GEOS.INI file. Find the line near the beginning of the file that says: continueSetup = true change it to read: continueSetup = false Then save the file and exit the editor. Later, once you have GEOS up and running you can set up your printer by choosing the 'printer' module from 'Preferences' (a program in your WORLD directory). On a few systems an easier alternative is to disable turbo mode (go down to 25mhz as opposed to 50mhz, for example) while installing. Once you have done one or the other you can run GEOS normally (run GEOS by typing GEOS, KERNEL, GEOS20, or LOADER, as appropriate. Do not run SETUP). =========================== Previous versions of Ensemble ==================== DOS: SETVER and GEOS In order to run GEOS with MS DOS 5 or 6 or PC DOS 7 or Windows 95, you may need to use the DOS SETVER command. SETVER is not required in all cases. Try using SETVER if GEOS won't run. WINDOWS 95 AND GEOS 2.0 Windows 95 contains MS DOS 7 and SETVER is required to run GEOS 2.0. Launch an MS DOS window and enter the following two lines at the DOS prompt: CD \WINDOWS SETVER C:\WINDOWS LOADER.EXE 6.0 Adjust your drive and path if Windows 95 has been installed on a different drive or in a different directory. Restart your computer to make the new version table take effect. Then run GEOS normally by launching the GEOS20.PIF file or LOADER.EXE from Windows 95. PC DOS 7 AND GEOS 2.0 The version table in PC DOS 7 comes with LOADER.EXE 6.3 already pre-installed, so all you need to do is make sure DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE is in the CONFIG.SYS file and GEOS 2.0 should run without any problems. PC DOS 7 AND ENSEMBLE 1.2, GEOWORKS PRO, OR QUICK START KERNEL.EXE is also already in the version table, but SETUP.EXE is not. So you have to make sure SETVER is loaded and then type SETVER SETUP.EXE 5.0 at the DOS prompt one time ever. MS DOS 6 AND GEOS 2.0 GEOS 2.0 is 100% compatible with MS-DOS 6.x. You may have received earlier information that you need the line: DEVICE = C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE in your CONFIG.SYS file. This is not always true of GEOS 2.0. GEOS 2.0 should run with no problems as long as your FILES and BUFFERS statements equal at least 30 each. Some customers report better performance with FILES=100. MS DOS 6 AND ENSEMBLE 1.2 OR GEOWORKS PRO OR QUICK START SETVER is required when using Ensemble 1.2, Geoworks Pro, or Quick Start with MS DOS 6. The usual symptom is that GEOS hangs at the "initializing drive module" line. If it's not already there, add the following line to your CONFIG.SYS file: DEVICE = C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE Then reboot your computer. At any DOS prompt, enter the following two lines: SETVER SETUP.EXE 5.0 SETVER KERNEL.EXE 5.0 You will see a warning message, followed by a message that the version table has been successfully updated. Reboot your computer. Run GEOS normally. MS DOS 5 AND ENSEMBLE 1.2 OR GEOWORKS PRO OR QUICK START SETVER is not required when using Ensemble 1.2 or Geoworks Pro or Quick Start with MS DOS 5. GEOWORKS ENSEMBLE 1.0 AND ALL DOS VERSIONS NEWER THAN DOS 4.01 In GEOS 1.0, the main executable is GEOS.EXE. If you're using GEOS 1.0 with MS DOS 5 or 6 or PC DOS 5 or 6 or 7, follow the steps below: 1. Make sure you have the following line in your CONFIG.SYS file: DEVICE = C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE Then reboot your computer. 2. At the DOS prompt, enter the following two lines: SETVER GEOS.EXE 4.01 SETVER SETUP.EXE 4.01 A message appears announcing that the version table has been successfully updated. 3. Reboot your machine and run GEOS normally. We do not guarantee that GEOS 1.0 will work at all with DOS versions newer than 4.01. If it does not, consider upgrading to a newer version of GEOS. Article#0119 Updated 05/29/96 Install: KR-01 Divide by Zero, fast computers If you get a "KR-01 Divide by zero" error message while installing GEOS on your Pentium or fast 486 computer, try disabling turbo mode (go down to 25mhz as opposed to 50mhz, for example) while installing. If your computer doesn't have a turbo button, you might be able to change the speed in the CMOS setup. The error may occur during the Printer Driver selection part of the Graphical Setup. Once GEOS is installed, you can run at the faster speed without a problem. If that doesn't work, go to the directory where GEOS is installed and use the DOS editor to edit the GEOS.INI file. Find the line near the beginning of the file that says: continueSetup = true change it to read: continueSetup = false Then save the file, exit the editor, and run GEOS normally (run GEOS by typing GEOS, KERNEL, GEOS20, or LOADER, as appropriate. Do not run SETUP again, or it will change your "false" back to "true"). To run GEOS 2.0 from Windows 3.11, you must turn 32 bit file access off. To turn off 32 bit file access, launch Control Panel in Windows 3.11. Then choose the Enhanced icon, Virtual Memory, Change..., and toggle the choice so there is no X in the box. == Steve Main steve@newdealinc.com Dir Tech Services, New Deal sales (800) 985-4263 http://www.newdealinc.com service (514) 633-6370
